CA, CMA, CS articleships and the finance-adjacent professional tracks
The professional-course routes into finance are demanding, underestimated, and - for the right person - unbeatable value.
Chartered accountancy, cost accountancy and company secretaryship remain among the highest-ROI entries into financial careers in India - punishing pass rates, modest fees, and credentials that carry weight from Mumbai to Singapore. The routes deserve a clear-eyed look.
What each actually opens
- CA: the heavyweight - audit, tax, deal advisory, and the most common qualification among Indian CFOs. The articleship years are the education
- CMA: cost and management accounting - corporate finance, FP&A, manufacturing economics. Undervalued relative to its corporate usefulness
- CS: governance and compliance - rising demand as listing and disclosure regimes tighten
Choosing the articleship
The firm matters less than the exposure. A mid-size firm where you touch audits, tax and certifications beats a large one where you vouch invoices for three years. Ask during interviews what you will actually do in year one.
The exit options
Qualify, then choose: practice (slow start, high ceiling), industry (immediate stability), or financial services proper - credit, equity research, IB operations all hire newly qualified CAs at strong packages. The credential's real gift is optionality; treat the first three years post-qualification as the degree you actually chose.
