Converting the internship: the two-month job interview

Internships at banks and fintechs are extended interviews with a conversion rate. Treat the calendar accordingly.

Summer internships at financial institutions convert to offers at rates between 30% and 70% depending on the institution - and the conversion decisions are made on evidence collected daily, not on the final presentation. The final presentation just announces what the team already concluded.

Weeks 1-2: become legible

  • Learn who actually decides conversions - usually your manager's manager, informed by everyone around you
  • Deliver the first small task perfectly: accuracy, format, deadline
  • Ask the structuring question early: "what would make this internship a clear yes for an offer?"

Weeks 3-6: the evidence builds

Own something small end to end. Ask for feedback explicitly and visibly act on it - the single strongest conversion signal is demonstrated coachability. Build two or three relationships outside your immediate team; conversions fail when one person is lukewarm and nobody else knows you.

Weeks 7-8: close deliberately

Book the career conversation before the final week: state plainly that you want to join and ask what stands between you and an offer. If the answer is a hesitation, you have days to address it. Most interns never ask - and leave with a nice certificate instead of a job.
