Talking about a career gap with a straight spine

A gap explained plainly is neutral. A gap explained nervously becomes the story.

Post-2023, gaps are common: layoffs in fintech, family responsibilities, health, a sabbatical, a failed venture. Interviewers in every market we work across have stopped treating gaps as disqualifying. What they still test is ownership.

The formula: fact, use, readiness

Three sentences. The fact: "I was out of the market for fourteen months after the restructuring." The use: "I completed the CFA Level III and advised two early-stage lenders on credit policy." The readiness: "I have been looking properly since June and I am clear on what I want next." Then stop. The more you elaborate, the more the gap dominates the hour.

Do not launder the gap

Stretching dates on a resume to hide six months is the one version that actually damages you. Background checks in banking are thorough, and a discovered inconsistency converts a neutral gap into an integrity question. Integrity questions do not get negotiated.

If the gap is still open

If you are currently between roles, show the market you are working, not waiting: consulting engagements, certifications, board advisory, a disciplined search. "I am treating the search as the job" is a complete and respectable position - if your calendar actually reflects it.
