Rewriting your resume for a sector change

Moving from banking to fintech, or insurance to consulting? The facts stay; the translation layer changes.

Sector moves fail at the resume stage because candidates describe themselves in the vocabulary of the industry they are leaving. A credit officer at a bank applying to a fintech is not a credit officer - they are someone who prices risk, builds policy and ships lending products. Same career, different translation.

Build the bridge line

Your summary must do the mapping explicitly: "Ten years pricing and managing SME credit risk; now building that judgment into lending products and automated policy." The reader should never have to infer why your past is relevant to their future.

Translate, do not inflate

  • Banking "sanctions" become "approved exposure of ₹X crore across Y files"
  • Insurance "persistency" becomes "retention of a ₹X crore premium book"
  • Internal projects become product language: shipped, launched, adopted

Neutralize the obvious objection

Every sector change has one: fintech fears bankers are slow; banks fear fintech hires are undisciplined. Name it and answer it in the summary or cover note: "comfortable in regulated environments; drawn to faster shipping cycles." Addressed head-on, the objection loses most of its power.
