Cover letters in 2026: shorter, sharper, optional until they are not
Most cover letters go unread. The ones that matter are read closely. Know which situation you are in.
For portal applications to large institutions, cover letters are rarely opened. For senior hires, referrals and search-firm submissions, they are read word by word. The error is writing the same letter for both.
When to write one
Write a letter when a human with decision power will read it: a named hiring manager, a search consultant, a referral. Skip it for bulk portal submissions unless the form requires one - your effort goes into the tailored resume instead.
The three-paragraph shape
- Paragraph one: the specific mandate and why it is interesting - one fact about the business that shows you looked
- Paragraph two: your two most relevant proofs, with numbers, mapped to their needs
- Paragraph three: logistics and intent - mobility, notice period, a clean close
One page maximum. Three-quarters of a page is better.
The line that kills letters
"I believe I would be a great fit for your esteemed organization." Every weak letter contains it. Delete any sentence that could be pasted unchanged into a letter to a competitor; what remains is the letter.
